Housing and Accommodation

It is said that "every man's home is his castle". That may be true in many cases, but, even Mansfield cannot guarantee a turreted garrison for every citizen! Nevertheless, this area can promise excellent quality housing at a lower price than many other regions in the East Midlands. And, there's a wide range of choice, from new developments to traditional stone cottages and from starter homes to executive residences. Mansfield District Council have designated around 3,350 new dwellings over the next ten years, including initiatives which have already linked the old with the new. Such developments as the Rock Valley housing transformation in the centre of town, refurbishing derelict buildings into an attractive riverside development with Victorian street furniture and landscaped gardens.

There's also been a tranformation through Forest Town's Urban Renewal Scheme, which has brought a modern look for hundreds of miners' cottages. Again, by landscaping, tree planting and employing special facelift operations, the area has been renovated to the extent that new life and meaning has been injected into the economic development of the village.

Like many other areas, Mansfield has to cope with the problem of homelessness and unemployment. However, determined to provide everyone with a good standard of living, their Guaranteed Accommodation Project helps to provide houses for the long-term unemployed. Mansfield District Council is committed to providing a quality service for its tenants in sheltered accommodation. A residential wardens system links to a 24 hour Central Control Centre.

Quality Developments

On the private front, housing has never been better, or more available. There are quality developments in every part of the Mansfield area, all offering style and low-cost living in terms of economical technologies. Everything from top quality insulation and double glazing to energy efficiency standards.

Some current private developments with properties available in the locality include: Bovis Homes "Mamesfelde Grange" in Mansfield; Barratt Homes at "The Acorns", Selston and "Meadowdale" in Kirkby; Sandhurst's "Oaklands" at Huthwaite; Ben Bailey Homes "The Orchids" in Sutton; Shepherd Homes "Birchfields" at South Normanton; Henry Boot Homes "Heathlands" in Sutton; Peveril Homes' properties in Blidworth; Langley Homes "Fulwood Farm" in Sutton and "Sherwood Acres" in Edwinstowe; Rippon Homes' development in Stintin Lane, Shirebrook; David Wilson Homes at "Haddon Grange" and "Oakdale Gardens" in Mansfield; and the "Friarswood" development for Crest Homes situated between Mansfield and Ravenshead.
