Description
Rock house was built in 1936 in the “Arts and Crafts” style popular at the time. It was built to the individual requirements of its first owner, Colonel Becher, who wanted a “Gentleman's Residence” which would accommodate large house parties. Many of the original features still remain including the “Lutyens style” thatched roof, leaded windows, oak panelling, western red cedar floorboards and a room service telegraph which is still in working order.
The house has been the subject of a sympathetic modernisation and refurbishment programme which has upgraded the fabric of the building in order to make it more suitable for 21st Century family living. The best example of this is the open plan kitchen / dining room which sits at the heart of the home.
Immediately surrounding the house there are two acres of grounds which are comprised mainly of lawns, interspersed with shrubs and trees. There is a full length paved terrace running along the South–West side of the house. The remaining six acres is made up of three woodland areas, one of which is home to a freshwater swimming pool (you can see someone swimming in it in the archive footage provided with these details). There are wonderful walks through the woods with open panoramic views across the Teign Valley. These areas provide all of the wood for the five wood burning stoves which augment the oil fired central heating system. There is a purpose built barn in the grounds housing machinery for cutting and splitting logs.
In addition to the wood supply, an array of photo-voltaic panels has been installed on the roof of the barn, optimally positioned to harvest the Sun's rays and generate in excess of 3000kw per year providing a healthy income via the Government backed Feed-In-Tariff scheme.
In summary Rock House will provide a home to suit a variety of needs from those wishing to step out of the rat-race and lead a more self-sufficent lifestyle, families to want to create a multi-generational home, owners looking to create additional revenue streams from guest house or holiday accommodation to someone looking for a wonderful family home in the midst of stunning scenery yet close to the city.

Take that road alongside the River Teign going over a humpbacked stone bridge. Where the road bears left go straight up the hill ahead, instead of following the valley road.
